The Sanctuary is the 82 acre patch of land that we currently nurture and care for on the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide, South Australia.Ā
Weāve been connected here since October 2018 as the non-indigenous custodians of the land. We respectfully acknowledge the original custodians of this unceded land, the Warki (Ngarrindjeri, of the Coorong and south Fleurieu coast), Kaurna (Adelaide Plains), Peramangk (Adelaide Hills) peoples.
The Sanctuary nature is legally protected from development as a private Sanctuary under the National Park Act and the river and land north of the river (60 acres) is protected under a state Heritage Bush Agreement.
We love that this is a place for nature to ādo its own thingā and weāre committed to doing our best to manage non-native plant and animals species to support the flourishing of the original nature.
The nature at The Sanctuary includes the Finniss River - the last major tributary into Australiaās largest river system, the Murray-Darling system. The water brings life and we have abundant insects, birds (including our iconic blue fairy wren), a nesting pair of wedge tail eagles and the threatenedĀ yellow tail black cockatoos, kangaroos, echidnas, possums, and koalas. We've evenĀ had a rare Rosenberg goanna trying to visit us in the shed.
We are growing food in our orchard, planning to build a house and creating The Sanctuary as a place to nurture, conserve and sustain.
